CBCT, or cone-beam computed tomography, is a type of x-ray imaging that is used to assess and diagnose dental issues. This advanced imaging is used when typical x-ray equipment is not sufficient enough for diagnoses. CBCT imaging produces 3D images of teeth, soft tissues, nerves, and maxillofacial bones.
CBCT Imaging
CBCT equipment produces high-quality images with minimal distortion, giving endodontists a clear picture of the patient’s oral health. This type of imaging is useful for assessing and diagnosing a variety of issues, including:
- Root Canal Infections
- Impacted Teeth
- Placement of Dental Implants
- Dental Fractures
- Iatrogenic Defects
- Extent of Cavities
- Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
- Bone Structure and Tooth Location
How Does CBCT Imaging Work?
During CBCT imaging, the x-ray machine will revolve around your head 360°. Using a cone-shaped x-ray beam, the machine takes photos of your head, neck, and jaw as it rotates. You will be standing while holding onto the handles in front of the machine, and your endodontist will have you bite down on a sterilized mouthpiece to stabilize your jaw and minimize movement.
As the machine passes x-rays through your head, images are recorded for your endodontist to review.
Is It Safe?
CBCT imaging is not routinely used as it emits a higher radiation level than typical dental x-rays. However, when patients have an advanced dental issue, clear imaging is key to proper diagnosis and treatment planning.
The benefits of proper diagnostic imaging outweigh the associated risks of CBCT x-rays. During CBCT imaging, every step is taken to decrease radiation risk – known as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) principles. Your endodontist will place a protective vest on you, and keep imaging sessions short, ensuring a safe session.
At Greater Endodontics, we are leaders in the latest research and technologies in the dental field. All of our endodontists are trained in safe operations of CBCT imaging machines. You can rest assured that you are in trusted hands if you have an imaging appointment scheduled with us.
Why Do I Need CBCT Imaging?
CBCT imaging is used to either diagnose a dental issue or plan proper execution of dental treatment.
If you have a root canal infection, CBCT x-rays show your endodontist how deep the root canal is. A clear picture of jaw bone structure and soft tissues is necessary if you need dental implants. CBCT imaging is also helpful in diagnosing cancers or tumors of the throat and jaw.
Before any imaging session, your endodontist will thoroughly explain the procedure and why it is necessary. This is a safe, non-invasive advanced endodontic technology. The session usually takes no more than a minute.
